Modernising an Ageing Server Room Without Replacing Everything

Education & Publishing  ·  Servers · Storage · Virtualisation · Network · Power · Monitoring

The challenge

The server room had grown incrementally over many years. Some systems were still serviceable, others were nearing end of life, cabling had become difficult to trace, and power or cooling events created avoidable risk. A full replacement was neither necessary nor budget-friendly.

Our approach

Astek carried out an inventory and dependency assessment, then separated components into retain, upgrade, consolidate and retire categories. The roadmap prioritised risk reduction before new purchases.

What Astek implemented

  • Documented physical and logical infrastructure dependencies.
  • Consolidated suitable workloads onto newer server resources.
  • Reorganised rack, cabling and power distribution for serviceability.
  • Improved storage and backup alignment for critical workloads.
  • Added monitoring for servers, network devices and key infrastructure conditions.
  • Created a phased refresh plan for remaining legacy equipment.

Business outcome

The organisation improved reliability and manageability without discarding usable infrastructure. Future upgrades could be planned in phases against a known architecture rather than handled as isolated emergencies.
